Our Social Advocacy project was focused around the creation of a zine. A zine is a self edited, self published book. They are normally printed on regular printer paper and can be filled with art, writing, or anything you want! In ours, we put a condensed version of a persuasive essay that we wrote on a social justice issue of our choice. Mine was about environmental racism.

For our project, we had to meet with and interview a social advocate that did work regarding the issue we were studying. Esperanza is a community leader in City Heights that advocates for transportation justice with the Environmental Health Coalition. This is one of the many issues that falls under the umbrella of environmental racism.

My group and I at our work table!

For this project, I worked with a group of 4 other people. They had topics that similarly fell under the umbrella of environmental issues. Their names are Nick, who's topic was sustainable fashion, Carla, who's topic was urbanization and the need for nature to be happy, Thalia, who's topic was animal abuse, and Adrian, who's topic was endangered animals. Our task was to create a zine, a self-published booklet, that put together information, art, and photos that showed all of our topics. The writing in the zine was a summarized version of a persuasive thesis essay that we wrote in humanities class about our topic, and the art was created with our group in cooperation with the Museum of Contemporary Arts San Diego. We were to sell this zine at the first ever Chula Vista Zine Fest, an event we organized in order to build community through advocating for our social justice topics.
